Cotton Mather: The Intersection of Faith and Scholarship

Born: February 12, 1663, Boston, Massachusetts Bay Colony
Died: February 13, 1728, Boston

Cotton Mather, son of Increase Mather and grandson of both Richard Mather and John Cotton, was the towering figure of New England Puritanism in its final chapter. A prodigious scholar and committed pastor, he entered Harvard at age 12 and published more than 400 works in his lifetime.

Mather preached beside his father at Boston’s North Church. Through his famous work, Manuductio ad Ministerium, he championed pastoral care for the poor and equipped future ministers. His sermons, essays, and histories combined Puritan piety with an eye for science and reform that still speaks today.
