John Cotton: A Faithful Shepherd in a New World

Born: December 4, 1585, Derby, England
Died: December 23, 1652, Boston, Massachusetts

Cambridge-trained pastor John Cotton fled persecution in England and became one of the most influential voices in early New England. In Boston, he preached Christ with conviction and crafted a vision for church life grounded in Scripture and covenant grace.

He believed the church should be ruled by Christ, not custom, and wrote with clarity on worship, leadership, and the spiritual care of God’s people. From children’s catechisms to church guidance, Cotton’s ministry flowed from a heart that trusted God’s Word and longed to see His people flourish.
