What does it really mean to humble ourselves, to pray, to seek Godโ€™s face, and to turn from evil?ย  John Preston answers those questions in The Golden Scepter Held Forth to the Humble with clarity and conviction. He lays out the path to revival: affliction, humility, repentance, and restored fellowship with God.

One of the most respected early English Puritans, Preston shows how God deals kindly with His people even in affliction, and how mercy is promised to the humble.ย Bound with smyth-sewn binding and printed on acid-free paper, this durable edition is made to be read, prayed through, and treasured.

    About the Author

John Preston stood at the crossroads of court politics and gospel ministryโ€”but chose the pulpit over prestige. A brilliant scholar, he taught in Cambridge, where his lectures drew crowds beyond capacity. Though admired by King James and offered high offices, Preston declined and remained faithful in his existing ministry. His sermons were known for their theological clarity, pastoral urgency, and fearless proclamation of truth. He preached until his death at age 41, famously saying, โ€œI shall change my place, but I shall not change my company.โ€

His important work needs to be as widely read and admired. Mostly it needs to be heeded and taken to heart.

    Quote from the book

    Image
James 4:8, โ€œCleanse your hands, ye sinners; and purify your hearts, ye double-minded?โ€ But how should we do it, some may ask. โ€œBe afflicted, and mourn, and weep; let your laughter be turned to mourning.โ€ Be content to sit alone, get out of company, do not take your former liberties, and mourn and humble yourselves. And do it constantly; for it is not bowing down the head for a day that God regards; but let sorrow abide in your hearts. It is continuance that God regards. ...Humility is the ground and promotes the growth of every grace. Seeds sown in a heart broken in pieces thrive and prosper; but instructions falling upon a heart that is not broken will bring forth no fruit. (p. 43-44)
