An Antidote Against Distractions by Richard Steele

    Edited by Dr. Don Kistler
    Hardcover • 144 pages • Smyth sewn • Acid-free paper

Worship is sacred—but so often, our minds are elsewhere. In this rare and timely work, Puritan pastor Richard Steele offers wise, pastoral counsel on guarding our hearts against distractions in the worship of God.

Drawing from 1 Corinthians 7:35, Steele shows how even good things—prayer, reflection, spiritual thoughts—can be out of place if they keep us from giving God the undivided attention He deserves. First published in the 17th century and now reintroduced in a modern edition, An Antidote Against Distractions urges believers to approach worship with focus, reverence, and joy.

    About the Author

Richard Steele was a Puritan pastor whose writings call believers to a wholehearted devotion to God. Even when laws pushed him out of his pulpit and hometown, Steele never wavered in proclaiming the riches of Christ. He served congregations in Hanmer and London, preaching through pressure, arrests, and misunderstanding. His greatest concern was the heart, especially its posture in worship. His work provides timely clarity today, urging believers to give God their whole hearts.

    Quote from the book

    Image
To pray aright is to “pray before the Lord” (Zechariah 8:21). To give thanks aright is to “[give] thanks before God” (Daniel 6:10), not in His sight only, for so you are when your hearts are worst. But good men looked to God when they spoke to Him, as we look on men when we speak to them. Melancthon said he had heard Luther in his secret prayers so pray that one would verily think there was somebody in the room with him to whom he spoke. (p. 4)
