John Preston: Bold Preaching, Deep Piety, Enduring Influence

Born: 1587, Heyford, Northamptonshire, England
Died: July 20, 1628, Preston-Capes, Northamptonshire, England

John Preston stood at the crossroads of court politics and gospel ministry—but chose the pulpit over prestige. A brilliant scholar, he taught in Cambridge, where his lectures drew crowds beyond capacity. Though admired by King James and offered high offices, Preston declined and remained faithful in his existing ministry.

His sermons were known for their theological clarity, pastoral urgency, and fearless proclamation of truth. He preached until his death at age 41, famously saying, “I shall change my place, but I shall not change my company.”
