Edited by Don Kistler
Hardcover • 304 pages • Smyth sewn • Acid-free paper
The Christian life is not one of ease, but of war—a spiritual battle between the flesh and the Spirit. In this powerful and pastoral work, Christopher Love unpacks Galatians 5:17 across 27 soul-searching sermons that reveal the inner conflict every believer faces.
A brilliant young Welsh preacher and member of the Westminster Assembly, Love preaches with clarity, urgency, and hope. This edition—his best-known work—has been carefully edited and retypeset for today’s reader, offering timeless counsel to those seeking victory over sin and deeper communion with Christ.

About the Author
Christopher Love didn’t just preach the gospel—he lived and died by it. A passionate Welsh Puritan with a heart for truth, Love ministered during the chaos of the English Civil War, when loyalties were divided and convictions were tested. His bold stand wasn’t for a political party, but for the Lordship of Christ and the authority of His Word.
He refused to compromise on biblical worship and ordination, often preaching with a fire that exposed error and called hearts to repentance. His sermons, shaped by suffering and conviction, always pointed to Christ as the anchor for weary souls and the sure foundation of the church. Even in his final hours, Love’s joy in Christ shone brightly, sealing his testimony as a faithful witness who counted no cost too great for the truth.

Quote from the book
A sword in a living man’s hand may pierce and wound, but a painted sword in a painted man’s hand upon the wall can do nothing at all. So the Word preached without the Spirit of God can do no more than a sword in the hand of St. George on horseback. It may please the fancy and tickle the ear, but never pierce the heart. It must be the Spirit of God that works upon the heart. (p. 8)
