The Ministry of Angels by Increase Mather

    Edited by Dr. Don Kistler
    Hardcover • 144 pages • Smyth sewn • Acid-free paper

In this rare and carefully reasoned work, Increase Mather—Puritan pastor and president of Harvard—guides readers through the scriptural teaching on angels with clarity and reverence.

Originally published in 1696, The Ministry of Angels addresses timeless questions: Do we each have a guardian angel? What role do angels play in the life of the believer? How are they ordered? What happened at the fall? This new edition, retypeset and Smyth-sewn for lasting use, brings a long-lost voice back to a subject that is often misunderstood.

    About the Author

Increase Mather was one of colonial New England’s most commanding voices—an author, preacher, and statesman who shaped the early American church. Son of Richard Mather, he pastored Boston’s Old North Church for over six decades and served as president of Harvard College.  He preached boldly during political turmoil, advocated for the Massachusetts Bay Colony in England, and cautioned against hysteria during the Salem witch trials. Mather’s enduring work on angels, providence, and pastoral theology continues to instruct believers with gravity and gospel clarity.

    Quote from the book

    Image
They know the Scriptures better than any man in the world. They have a deeper insight into Scripture mysteries. Hence the angel said to Daniel (10:21), “I will show thee that which is noted in the Scripture of truth.” They know what things are in the Scripture and can give the sense and meaning of them. They are more knowing in the counsels of God, more privy to the counsels of heaven, than any men on the earth are. (p. 9)
