About the Author
A faithful Puritan pastor in London, Cole preached with clarity, conviction, and a heart full of reverence for the gospel. Though not well known today, he was a powerful voice in his time, succeeding Philip Nye and regularly preaching in one of the most influential pulpits in 17th-century England.
Once a tutor to John Locke, Cole also trained young ministers, shepherded his congregation with care, and preached Christ with both depth and warmth. Known as “an unbending Calvinist,” he held firmly to the doctrines of grace, believing that salvation belonged entirely to the Lord—from beginning to end.

It is true, a holy life becomes a Christian; we cannot be Christians without it; but it does not make a person a Christian. Nothing but faith in Christ makes a Christian, from where all true holiness found in believers springs. I have sometimes told you that preaching holiness, pressing holiness with little or no mention of Christ, will never bring men to Christ; but preaching up Christ will bring men to holiness; that is the right spring and root of all true godliness. It as much belongs to Christ to sanctify us as to justify us. (p. 42)
